Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the third umpire for Yashasvi Jaiswal's controversial dismissal on the final day of the fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Monday. Trying to pull a short of length delivery going down the leg side, Jaiswal decided to go for a pull.
However, the ball took a slight deflection when it passed Jaiswal's bat, thus prompting the Australian players go all out for an appeal. On-field umpire Joel Wilson remained unmoved before Cummins went upstairs.
Bangladesh's Sharfuddoula Saikat, who was the third umpire, looked satisfied after seeing the deflection of the ball despite the snicko metre showing no spike. He then advised Wilson to reverse his decision and rule Jaiswal out. The India batter had a war of words with the umpire before taking his long walk back.
Legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar, who was the commentator, seemed visibly angry with the decision. “If the evidence of the technology is not to be taken, why have it at all? That is something that would definitely be the query as far as the Indians are concerned,” Gavaskar remarked on Channel7.
“Yes it looked like it might have gone off the glove but there can be an optical illusion. Often we see when the ball is brand new, that the ball goes near the bat’s edge and then moves away, and that is because, you know, the optical illusion from those watching here is that it has taken a nick,” added the legendary India batter.
Eventually, India lost to Australia by 184 runs in the fourth Test to trail 1-2 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Chasing a 340-run target, India were bowled out for 155 in 79.1 overs on day five. Jaiswal (84 off 208) fought a lone battle for the visitors with his second half century of the game.
Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant (30 off 104) batted out the entire second session to take India to 112/3 but the latter's fall opened the doors for the home team.
Optical illusion can be defined as something that deceives the eye by appearing to be other than it is.
